Overview

Within the framework of an open multicentric study which was implemented in 407 depar-tments of the Czech Republic in 2073 patients the antihypertensive effect and tolerance ofbetaxolol (Lokren ® ) was tested.Medicamentous treatment led to a statistically significant drop of the systolic and diastolicpressure in both investigated periods comprising 28 and 56 days of treatment. At the ons et ofthe study the mean BP reading was 162.9 (±14.7)/102.1 (±5.1) mm Hg and the pulse rate 79.7(±10.1)/min. After 28 days of treatment the BP readings dropped to 143.4 (±14.8)/88.1 (±7.4)and the pulse rate to 69.6 (±7.8)/min. A further drop occurred also during the subsequent period, thus after 56 days of betaxolol treatment the BP values were 140.5 (±13.5)/85.8 (±6.7) and thepulse rate 68.2 (±7.3)/min.The tolerance of treatment was satisfactory and undesirable side-effects were recorded only in52 (2.5%) patients incl. 32 (1.5% where treatment had to be discontinued. As in the great majority of hypertonic patients monotherapy was not involved, the occurrenceof undesirable side-effects cannot be ascribed unequivocally to the evaluated preparation.

Key words:
