Overview

Up to 15% of couples are diagnosed with infertility. The male cause of infertility is being found in up to 50% of couples. There is a correlation between sperm quality and male health status. Sperm quality is frequently decreased in inflammatory bowel disease patients, especially those in the active disease phase. This decrease is due to both the disease and its treatment. This article summarises knowledge of male infertility in inflammatory bowel disease patients from urological and immunological view points, and should be useful for gastroenterologists and patients who are considering trying to conceive.
