Overview
Primary prevention of atherosclerosis should begin in childhood. To the integral part of the complex care of children at risk belongs a spa treatment. Results of the one-month spa treatment of 164 children with obesity, dyslipidemia and hypertension are demonstrated. Total cholesterol level decreased from 4.54 to 3.66 mmol/L, LDL cholesterol from 2.79 to 2.09 mmol/l, triglycerides from 1.01 to 0.82 mmol/L, Lp(a) from 0.28 to 0.20 mmol/l, apo B from 0.88 to 0.75 mmol/l, insulin from 13.54 to 11.5 mIU/l, GGT from 0.33 to 0.22 mmol/l. The reduction of all parameters was statistically significant (p<0.001) as well as the reduction of BMI and anthropometric measurements. Only blood glucose value remained unchanged following 30 days of spa treatment. The decrease of total cholesterol was followed also by a decrease of HDL cholesterol from 1.31 to 1.11 mmol/l, and apo A from 1.29 to 1.08 mmol/l.
In conclusion, results of the spa treatment for children with the serious risk factors of atherosclerosis is effective and it should be an integral part of the care for these children.Key words:
