Overview

In a group of 1326 patients treated at the Clinic of Oral, Maxillary and Facial Surgery, Faculty Hospital and Medical Faculty Olomouc in 1974-1998 on account of malignant tumors of the orofacial region there were 31 patients (2.3%) with duplicit tumorous disease. These patients were treated on account of spinocellular carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx, or the skin of the face and neck where in the course of treatment or after its termination another duplicit malignant tumor was diagnosed. Or else they were patients where a malignant tumor in the orofacial area was diagnosed during or after terminated treatment of a tumor at another primary site. These duplicit tumors were found most frequently in the lymphatic system and digestive tract, less frequently in the lungs or urogenital system. As expected patients suffering from duplicit tumors survived for a shorter period than patients with a solitary malignoma. From the total number of 31 patients 39% patients with primary affection of the orofacial area survived for 2.5 years and only 10% patients survived for 5 years. The prognosis of the disease was even worse in patients suffering from primary tumors at a different site, where the malignant tumour in the orofacial region was diagnosed as duplicit. In this group 18% survived after 2.5 years and none of the patient survived for 5 years.

Key words:
primary tumorous disease - duplicit and multiplicit tumourous disease - survival
