Overview

The authors analyzed 200 panoramatic radiograms of edentulous maxillae andmandibles. They investigated the prevalence, frequency and site of pathological findings. Theyrecorded the presence of pathological findings such as residual fragments of roots, unspecifiedshadows, retained teeth and light spots. The authors recorded pathological findings in 21.5 %patients. All assessed pathological findings were more frequently in distal parts of the maxillaand mandible as compared with the frontal parts. In the maxilla there were significantly moreretained teeth in the mandible there were significantly more residual root fragments and othershadows. The authors consider panoramatic radiography with regard to the high prevalenceand clinical impact of detected pathological findings, as indicated and useful before treatmentby a complete denture.
