Overview
Assessment and prevention of suicidal ideation have undergone a significant transformation in recent years, driven by the development of cognitive and technological methods capable of capturing processes beyond conscious control. Traditional clinical interviews and self-report questionnaires remain fundamental tools in practice, but their predictive value is limited, particularly in patients who downplay, fail to recognize, or intentionally conceal their difficulties. New approaches therefore focus on more objective methods capable of detecting subtle changes in attention, inhibition, or implicit associations linked to suicide risk. These tools also open the door to a more precise understanding of the cognitive mechanisms that may precede a conscious decision to engage in self-harming behavior. Another important pillar consists of multi-level prevention strategies, which have the strongest empirical support across healthcare systems. This indicates that the most effective approach lies in a combination of objective cognitive methods, technological tools, and structural measures focused on care accessibility, media engagement, restricting access to lethal means, and follow-up support after crisis episodes. The article offers a comprehensive view of how modern scientific knowledge can contribute to better accurate risk assessment and more effective prevention of suicidal behavior.
