Overview
Necrotising enterocolitis is the most common acquired gastrointestinal disease in premature infants and, less frequently, in fullterm newborns. Its etiopathogenesis is multifactorial and results from the interaction between newborn nutrition, intestinal dysbiosis, and the body›s inflammatory response. Mortality and morbidity from this disease remain high despite advances in neonatal care. This review provides a summary of the latest findings on the possibilities of early diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and postoperative care, which can contribute to reducing adverse effects on the child›s further development.
