Overview
Cystic lesions in the oral cavity of newborns are a relatively common finding and usually do not pose a serious health risk to the child. They are characterized by their predominantly asymptomatic occurrence and tendency to disappear spontaneously. However, they can cause inappropriate concern for the parents and undereducated medical staff. The most numerous group is represented by relatively uniform types of inclusion cysts, which differ from each other in their location and embryonic origin. Retention, dermoid, and epidermoid cysts are less common. The role of the neonatologist is identify the type of lesions, determine the basic observation and treatment plan, and adequately inform the parents of the newborn.
