Hypotension following induction to general anaesthesia: prevalence, significance, risk factors and preventive management options

Overview

Hypotension following induction to general anaesthesia occurs frequently in clinical practice. The aim of our narrative review was to offer a summary of the literature data dealing with the issue. Absolute blood pressure values and relative decrease in pressure are discussed, suggesting the limits which cannot be tolerated and require intervention. Hypotension after induction to general anaesthesia is associated with increased postoperative mortality and prolonged hospital length of stay. It also presents one of a few potentially responsive factors influencing postoperative morbidity and mortality.
