News SCOPE 2021 –⁠ State of Osteoporosis and Its Treatment in European Countries

The SCOPE 2021 project (The Scorecard for Osteoporosis in Europe) by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) gathered and tabulated data from 29 European countries on the burden of osteoporosis, the quality and availability of services related to the diagnosis and treatment of this disease, and the use of these services in individual states. Within the significantly heterogeneous results, the Czech Republic did not fare very well.

News Final Analysis of the STASEY Study: How Did Emicizumab Fare in the Prophylaxis of Hemophilia A Patients with FVIII Inhibitors?

The July virtual congress of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) 2021 offered a variety of interesting topics. Among the poster presentations, data from the multicenter, single-arm, open-label phase III STASEY clinical trial, which evaluated the safety and tolerability of emicizumab prophylaxis in patients with hemophilia A and an FVIII inhibitor, were included. The results were presented on behalf of an international team of authors by Víctor Jiménez-Yuste from the University Hospital La Paz in Madrid.

News If Suicides Were COVID-19... or Why We Still Overlook a Significant Cause of Premature Deaths?

More than a year since the start of the pandemic, the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has claimed 2.8 million lives globally, with 127 million recorded cases of COVID-19 (as of March 29, 2021). According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, there are 800,000 suicides annually, with suicide attempts being up to 20 times more frequent, totaling over 16 million. Given our current focus on physical health, are we overlooking the extent and importance of mental health issues in the population? This question has been raised by several experts from different countries in their submission to the February issue of The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.

News Can AI Help Accelerate the Development of Antibiotics for Gonorrhea and MRSA?

The overuse of antibiotics has helped bacteria become resistant to them. In the fight against antibiotic resistance, the involvement of artificial intelligence in the development of new drugs could prove beneficial. Using AI, experts from MIT examined more than 36 million possible compounds and evaluated their antimicrobial properties. The researchers also analyzed potential new compounds that had not yet been synthesized. The best candidate molecules discovered are structurally distinct from all existing antibiotics and appear to disrupt bacterial cell membranes through previously unobserved mechanisms.

Anesthesiologist MUDr. Jan Lejčko from the Pain Treatment Center at KARIM LF UK and FN Plzeň, Vice-President of the Society for the Study and Treatment of Pain ČLS JEP, concentrated on types of pain and principles and options of treatment, particularly using metamizole, in his lecture.
