News Diagnosis of AAT Deficiency According to Italian Recommendations and a Clear Algorithm for Practice

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is a genetic disorder that primarily affects the lungs and liver. It is considered a rare disease, but it is also significantly underdiagnosed. Given the availability of specific treatment, which involves the administration of purified alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) derived from human plasma in patients with COPD due to AATD, identifying these patients is crucial. We summarize the recently issued Italian recommendations for the diagnosis of AATD and place them in the context of Czech standards.

News Pain Management After Day Surgery

Effective pain control is a crucial part of recovery for patients after painful surgical procedures. In clinical practice, combined analgesia using paracetamol and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is commonly utilized, which, however, is not suitable for up to a quarter of patients. An alternative could be metamizole. A study published in the European Journal of Anaesthesiology evaluated the non-inferiority of the combination of paracetamol/metamizole versus paracetamol/ibuprofen in pain management for patients after day surgery.

News Treatment of Low-Risk MDS According to NCCN Recommendations Version 1.2023

The latest recommendations from the American National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) for the diagnosis and treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) include several updates incorporated into the graphical algorithms. Most patients with MDS have low-risk (LR) disease. We provide a summary of the current guidelines NCCN for the therapy of this group of patients, which differ depending on the presence of symptomatic anemia or clinically relevant thrombocytopenia or neutropenia.
