News Which Dietary Recommendations Actually Work for Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Food is both a trigger for symptoms and a treatment tool for individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). A 2021 review summarizes the results of the latest research on the effectiveness of dietary measures for IBS and the evidence of which measures are truly beneficial. A positive impact was found for general healthy eating recommendations, soluble fiber supplementation, a low short-chain carbohydrate diet, and probiotic administration.

News How Does Cenobamate Compare with Third-Generation Anti-Seizure Medications in Terms of Cost-Effectiveness?

The main goal of epilepsy treatment is to achieve seizure freedom without unacceptable side effects of therapy. Despite the benefits of the latest generation of anti-seizure medications (ASMs), approximately 40% of patients suffer from drug-resistant epilepsy. The recently approved cenobamate brings new hope to patients. A Spanish pharmacoeconomic study aimed to compare the cost-effectiveness of cenobamate with selected third-generation ASMs as adjunctive therapy in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy.

News Cenobamate −⁠ A Case Study from Slovak Real Practice

Cenobamate is indicated for adjunctive therapy of focal seizures with or without secondary generalization in adult patients who have not achieved sufficient results with previous treatment with at least 2 antiepileptics. This new anti-seizure medication with a dual mechanism of action thus brings another therapeutic option for patients refractory to treatment. At the November 34th Slovak-Czech Epileptology Congress in Bratislava, during a symposium titled “Is there hope for a quality life with epilepsy?” doc. MUDr. Eva Feketeová, PhD., from the Neurological Clinic LF UPJŠ and UNLP in Košice shared her first experiences with cenobamate in clinical practice.

The incidence of renal carcinoma is increasing every year. About a quarter of the cases are still diagnosed in the metastatic stage, yet early treatment can save lives. Below, we briefly summarize data on the incidence, etiology, and risk factors of this malignant disease based on a literature review from 1945–2015. These findings may be significant for prevention and screening in high-risk individuals.

News Hypotension during treatment with sacubitril/valsartan: practical tips for prevention and management

Despite the undeniable benefits of sacubitril/valsartan in terms of morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic heart failure, its administration can be complicated by side effects. The most common of these is hypotension. Although it is an unpleasant complication, it does not –⁠ and should not –⁠ always be a reason to discontinue therapy. Fear of hypotension should not lead to not prescribing sacubitril/valsartan at all. We provide practical guidance on how to approach this clinical situation.

News Regorafenib and Trifluridine/Tipiracil: Hospitalization and Clinical Outcomes in the Treatment of Metastatic Colorectal Cancer

Regorafenib and trifluridine/tipiracil are drugs that prolong overall survival (OS) in pre-treated patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). The difference in the toxicity of these agents led to the hypothesis that treatment toxicity of individual drugs might increase the number of hospitalizations, thereby affecting patients' quality of life. The study presented below aimed to analyze the number of hospitalizations during treatment and their possible impact on OS.

News Effect of Zolpidem on the Quality of Overnight Sleep in Terms of Episodic Memory Formation

Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic used for the short-term treatment of insomnia in adults. Previous studies have shown that this gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA-A) agonist stimulates the occurrence of sleep spindles during short daytime sleep, thereby enhancing episodic memory. A recently published study focused on the effect of zolpidem on memory after overnight sleep.
