News Care of Dental Dentures According to the Recommendations of the American Society of Dental Prosthetists

Dental dentures are the most common solution for missing teeth in the jaw. They should serve patients for several years, so proper care is essential. Therefore, dental professionals should not only be able to make them perfectly but also provide their patients with quality information about their maintenance. However, individual experts often differ in their recommendations, advising based on their own experiences, and even national dental organizations do not always have these information easily accessible. The American Society of Dental Prosthetists has therefore issued a series of recommendations that can be followed by both doctors and patients or caregivers.

News Neoadjuvant Immunotherapy in Resectable Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Antibodies against the programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) improve the survival of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, their use has not yet been tested in patients with resectable NSCLC. In 2018, the New England Journal of Medicine published the results of a pilot study of neoadjuvant therapy with nivolumab in patients with resectable NSCLC. Based on the promising results of this study, the investigative team subsequently decided to also test a combination of nivolumab and ipilimumab.

News Doc. Milan Sova: AAT substitution is available to all indicated patients. It is therefore crucial to now educate about the necessity of regular treatment

Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is one of the most common genetic disorders in adults. It is usually associated with the early development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or liver damage. We discuss how modern substitution therapy can change patients' prognosis and when to consider this diagnosis with the head of the Clinic of Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis at Masaryk University Faculty of Medicine and Brno University Hospital, Doc. MUDr. Milan Sova, Ph.D.

News What Can We Expect from Sorafenib in the Treatment of Liver Cancer Affected by Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease?

Ubiquitous and increasingly common obesity is a risk factor for many cancers. Over the past 20 years, studies have linked obesity to higher incidences of breast and colorectal cancers, as well as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). What is the efficacy and safety of sorafenib in this patient population, and does it differ from patients with liver cancers caused by viral infection or alcohol abuse? This intrigued a team of researchers from Melbourne, Australia.

News Collagen Turnover as a Biomarker of Hemophilia Treatment Efficacy

Over the past decades, hemophilia treatment has made significant progress—from factor therapy to prophylactic regimens and non-factor products, and even to gene therapy. Its development has greatly improved the quality of life for hemophiliacs and reduced the incidence of bleeding episodes. However, they cannot be completely eliminated, which is why further options for monitoring bleeding and joint status are still being explored. In addition to classical methods, biomarkers are attracting attention, but their practical use is still the subject of studies. A recently published work by a team of European and American experts, who assessed collagen turnover as a biomarker of treatment efficacy with rurioctocog alfa pegol, came with interesting results.

News Treatment of COPD in Individuals with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency

A mutation in the gene for alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT), leading to its deficiency (AATD), causes progressive irreversible destruction of lung tissue. Patients develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and early emphysema. Several studies evaluating COPD treatment have excluded patients with AATD. The aim of the following systematic literature review was to find and analyze works that include patients with concurrent COPD and AATD and summarize key findings that may form the basis for treatment decisions.
