News Summary of Czech Recommendations for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Schizophrenia in Children and Adolescents 2022
In June 2022, the Psychiatric Society of the Czech Medical Association JEP updated its recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia in children and adolescents. This is the first online version, which will allow for faster implementation of new findings important for clinical practice and decision-making by state institutions. We bring you a summary of the key points of these recommendations.Source: Modern Treatment of Schizophrenia 21. 2. 2023News Bacterial Biofilm as a Complication of Respiratory Disease Treatment
One of the unique characteristics of certain microorganisms is their ability to form organized communities enveloped in extracellular polymeric matrix and firmly attached to a solid surface or interphase or forming aggregates, collectively referred to as biofilm. Clinically, the major issue is the formation of pathogenic and conditionally pathogenic organisms' biofilm on tissues (such as respiratory tracts) or the surfaces of various medical devices (including catheters and implants), as it represents a dangerous complication leading to the development of chronic, recurrent, and scarcely treatable conditions.Source: Cough Therapy 28. 11. 2023News Improving treatment outcomes of HF with preserved ejection fraction according to JACC: What does the success of gliflozins mean for the future?
The Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) recently issued a scientific statement in which the authors thoroughly examined current knowledge on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction of the left ventricle (HFpEF). Recent studies in this heterogeneous disease suggest the importance of carefully determining the HFpEF phenotype in a given patient based on pathophysiology, which enables better individualization of treatment. The authors also reflect on the success of gliflozins in treating HFpEF and how HFpEF pharmacotherapy can be further improved.Source: Heart Failure 4. 3. 2024News Bimekizumab in 3rd Line Biological Treatment After Risankizumab Failure – Case Study
The possibilities of biological therapy for severe forms of psoriasis are very broad today. Achieving remission or reducing disease activity by 90-100% from the baseline state (PASI 90-100) is highly probable, especially when using biological drugs from the IL-17 or IL-23 inhibitor groups. However, individually, patients may exhibit primary or secondary resistance even when using these preparations, necessitating a change in biological treatment. The following case study presents the case of a young man who achieved complete disease remission with bimekizumab after the previous failure of ixekizumab and risankizumab.Source: Psoriasis 22. 3. 2024News Don't Hesitate to Refer a Patient to the MS Center: Time is Brain! Or What Recent Czech Research Has Shown?
Time is crucial for every disease, but it is doubly true for diseases of the nervous system! Why is it important to diagnose and treat multiple sclerosis (MS) early? How to do it? And how are we doing with speed here in the Czech Republic?Source: Neurology - Multiple Sclerosis 17. 5. 2024News Ocrelizumab in the Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis – 10-Year Data
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a lifelong disease with a high risk of permanent disability. Current information on the long-term efficacy and safety of treatment is therefore absolutely essential for the optimal choice of therapeutic agent – in this case, ocrelizumab.Source: Neurology - Multiple Sclerosis 20. 2. 2024News Fixed combination tramadol/paracetamol as an effective and safe option for long-term pain treatment even in polymorbid patients
Combined analgesics were historically recommended exclusively for the treatment of acute or postoperative pain, mainly due to the risk of individual components which, although potentiated their analgesic effect, also exhibited significant organ toxicity or led to long-term and difficult-to-resolve abuses. In recent years, however, fixed combinations containing fewer components have increasingly appeared on the market, and thanks to the optimal synergy of their effects, they can be used in smaller and safe doses. One such combination is tramadol with paracetamol, the place and possibilities of which in the treatment of chronic pain are discussed in the following text.Source: Updates in Pain Treatment 1. 11. 2023News Transthyretin – More Than a Thyroxine Transporter
Transthyretin (TTR) is an extracellular protein whose main role is to transport thyroxine and retinol in the body and brain. TTR tends to form amyloid deposits, which can lead to systemic disease known as TTR amyloidosis. Recently, it has been shown that this protein has a much wider spectrum of activities in the organism than previously thought.Source: Amyloidosis 6. 2. 2023News Diagnosis of von Willebrand Disease Step by Step
Von Willebrand disease (vWD) is the most common congenital bleeding disorder, with an estimated prevalence of 1/1000. It is classified into 3 types based on the form and extent of quantitative or qualitative deficiency. Diagnosis of vWD is a complex process that usually takes some time.Source: Von Willebrand Disease 27. 4. 2021News Revolutionary Change in the Paradigm of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Treatment in the Czech Republic
At the beginning of last year, there was a revolutionary change in the paradigm of multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment in the Czech Republic. Patients with MS and an unfavorable prognosis no longer have to go through ineffective medications on their way to highly effective therapy (HET, High Efficacy Therapy), but can be treated with the highly effective drug Ocrevus® from the first symptoms of the disease.Source: Neurology - Multiple Sclerosis 11. 9. 2023News Principle of Slowed Wound Healing Due to Stress Revealed
There is no doubt that psychological stress significantly slows down the process of healing wounds. The principle of how this phenomenon occurs, however, has remained unexplained. Swiss scientists focused on macrophages. Their function is to remove pathogens from the healing wound.Source: Wound Healing 28. 4. 2020Články časopisu Diabetes mellitus and heart failure: the role of SGLT2 inhibitors
