Transrectal ultrasonography guided prostate needle biopsy

Overview

Transrectal ultrasonography guided prostate needle biopsy has become the procedure of choice for obtaining high-quality tissue cores for histopatological assessment in the patients with suspected prostate cancer. The sextant method has become widely accepted as the „gold standard“ biopsy technique. However, concern has arisen that the sextant biopsy method under-samples the prostate and may consequently fail to detect a significant proportion of clinically important tumors. It is uncertain how many biopsy cores are needed to optimize the detection of these tumors. Improved glandular coverage, by either taking more biopsies per gland and/or optimalization of the systematic biopsy scheme, should minimize sampling inaccuracy. Local anesthesia enables to make procedure almost painless and improve acceptance of particularly repeated biopsies.
