Overview

The paper reviews a past development and current options available for cryopreservation of germinal cells, embryos and tissues in assisted reproduction. Indications for cryopreservation and storage of sperm, oocytes, embryos and testicular and ovarian tissue are presented. Two cooling and thawing methods are described (slow computer-assisted freezing, vitrification), including the use of cryoprotectants (glycerol, DMSO, PROH). Prior to storage in a cryostorage vessel, serological examination of HIV1,2; hepatitis and syphilis to prevent cross contamination of biological material has to be performed.

Key words:
cryopreservation – vitrification – cryoprotectant – thawing – sperm – oocyte – embryo – ovarian tissue
