Identification of the antigen Ki-67 in the atrophic endometrium and in serous carcinoma

Overview
The paper evaluates the proliferation‑related Ki- 67 antigen expression in the atrophic endometrium and in serous endometrial carcinoma. We performed an immunohistochemical examination of 10 samples with atrophic endometrium and 10 samples with serous endometrial carcinoma in atrophic endometrium. No expression of Ki- 67 was detected in atrophic endometrium. In serous endometrial carcinoma, the expressi on of Ki- 67 was high and correlated with worse clinical behaviour of the tumour. In conformity with other publications, we conclude that the expression of this protein is an excellent marker of malignant transformation of endometrial epithelial cells in postmenopausal period that do not produce Ki- 67 under normal conditions. Therefore evaluati on of this protein by immunohistochemistry is an important factor with implications for clinical practice (Tab. 1, Fig. 2, [44]).
