Overview

Background:
Digital imaging techniques and PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) are used by almost all medical specialties. Our department implemented this system in September 2005. All performed endoscopic surgeries and ultrasound scans are archived through PACS. Archived images are part of the patient’s documentation. Guarantee is responsible for the choice of interesting images from the archive, complements them with the structured report and sends to the anonymous tutorial database of Masaryk University. Digital images are used as an educational material and complement the traditional way of teaching.

Material designed for digital tutorial archive:
Digital images produced during the examination of our patients are in DICOM format (Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine) and archived through PACS in the archive of University hospital Brno. Selected images are supplemented with the report, keywords, anonymized and send to the tutorial archive.

Results:
Tutorial database contains total number of 800 files. Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology completed 150 files. Modalities are: endoscopic camera, ultrasound, CT, MRI, PET, X-ray. Database is being extended continuously by new images from the hospital PACS archive.

Discussion and Conclusion:
PACS represents a voluminous source of images. Every medical specialty has a guarentee responsible for the choice of digital images destined for medical students. They can access the archive and images due to an option of anonymization. Digital tutorial archive is an interesting tool for the digital format teaching and makes the lectures more interesting and visual. Database is being complemented with new images and offers an option of cooperation and sharing the images among other medical institutions.
