Overview
Cord blood is an important source of hematopoetic stem cells that could be used for transplantations in many life-threating conditions. As opposed to bone marrow harvesting, cord blood collection does not stress donor and subsequent transplantation is connected with a decreased risk of host-graft reaction. Since 1997 Slovak Registry of Placental Hematopoetic Cells (Eurocord-Slovakia) has been involved in preparation and processing of cord blood transplantates. This article presents brief information on method of cord blood processing, activity of Registry and perspective use of cord blood stem cells for cell therapy.
