Overview

Thyroid carcinomas in childhood represent a rare but clinically significant group of malignancies, the incidence of which has been increasing over recent decades, including in the Czech Republic. Although they account for a small proportion of all pediatric cancers, they constitute the most common endocrine malignancy in this age group. Pediatric thyroid carcinomas are characterized by specific biological and clinical features, particularly a higher frequency of multifocal and bilateral disease and an increased incidence of cervical lymph node metastases already present at the time of diagnosis. The most common histological subtype is papillary thyroid carcinoma, which is associated with an excellent long-term prognosis when an appropriate therapeutic strategy is applied. This review summarizes current knowledge on the epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of thyroid carcinomas in childhood, with a focus on specific Czech data and on surgical management from the perspective of pediatric otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery.
