Importance of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) for Metastatic Dissemination of Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of Salivary Glands

Overview

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is one of relatively common malignant salivary tumors. It is characterized by slow, but relenteless progression with proclivity to late hematogenous dissemination. Lymphogenous spread of salivary ACC is rare. However, in some cases nodal metastases may go undetected for many years. Recently, there is growing clinical and experimental evidence, that the growth and spread of some tumors via blood and lymphatic vessels is associated with the production of various factors. Among them, family of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is considered to be most crucial. Hematogenous and lymphogenous metastasis are promoted with VEGF-A/B and VEGF-C/D, respectively, which are produced by tumor cells. Here we present a literature overview of up to now published studies, confirming the role of VEGF in progression and hematogenous spread of salivary ACC. The importance of this factor for lymphangiogenic dissemination of that histopathologic entity is not clear, mainly because of limited number of studies published so far.
