The Contribution of PET/CT Examination to Diagnostics of Unknown Primary Tumor with Metastases into Cervical Lymphatic Nodes – Our Experience

Overview
The head and neck carcinoma constitutes about 3-5% of all malignant tumors. In is the cancer of oral cavity, pharynx and larynx in most cases. These tumors are characterized by early metastases into regional lymphatic nodes and advanced stage of the disease at the time when the diagnosis is established. In 2 – 9% of cases we diagnose a metastasis into lymphatic node without the finding of primary tumor. In such case the task is to identify the primary tumor. Clinical ORL examination, imaging methods and endoscopic examinations in general anesthesia are the basis in the search for primary tumor. PET/CT examination has recently become indispensable in the algorithm of examination. The paper presents our experience and the PET/CT results in our group of patients. We evaluate the contribution of PET/CT in the diagnostics of 13patients treated at our clinic in 2003 to 2010. In our group of patients, histological examination enabled to diagnose and identify primary tumor in five cases. PET/CT examination did not show the primary tumor in any case.
