Overview

Problems of diagnosing and rehabilitation of serious disorders of swallowing wereuntil now neglected in this country. The treatment of dysphagia abroad is well established as anindependent branches of medicine. The key to success is a team effort of all the relevant departmentsinvolved in the patient’s treatment. In co-operation with The Clinic of Radiology and ImagingMethods at the University Hospital Motol Prague, we developed the new diagnostic and rehabilita-tion measures. A special fluoroscopic investigation consists of analysis of the swallowing activityduring which disorders are diagnosed and the effects of various rehabilitation techniques are putto test. All the tests carried out serve as a basis for a comprehensive rehabilitation plan, whichincludes postural techniques, stimulation methods, swallowing manoeuvres, dietary modification, exercise programmes, intraoral prosthesis, medication and if necessary surgical procedures. The beneficial effects of diagnostic and rehabilitation methods are supported by case-histories ofpatients with swallowing reflex disorders.
