Overview
Benzodiazepine (BZD) dependence in the geriatric population represents a significant risk associated with cognitive impairment, falls, and somatic instability. The author presents a case of a female patient (born 1936) examined at the Emergency Department of the University Hospital Brno for generalized tremor, restlessness, and decompensated hypertension with chest pain. The patient's medication history was dominated by psychotropic medications considered inappropriate for older adults, including long-term benzodiazepine use. The treatment strategy involved adjustment of medication and close cooperation with the family in supervising medication adherence. Successful elimination of BZDs in the elderly requires a patient-centered approach and education of caregivers, but it is not always advisable. This case report highlights the necessity of regular review of chronic prescription not only psychiatric medication in geriatrics and cooperation with family.
