Overview

Impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia (IAH) is a serious complication of type 1 diabetes which increases the risk of severe hypoglycaemia approximately sixfold, leads to impaired quality of life and increases morbidity and mortality of those affected. It is caused by impaired hormonal and symptomatic responses to hypoglycaemia as a consequence of recurrent hypoglycemic episodes. From clinical perspective it’s important that IAH is a potentially reversible condition by strict avoidance of hypoglycaemia for a period of time. In this work we briefly summarize the interventions aimed at restoration of the awareness of hypoglycaemia and present data from the IAH clinic run in the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, UK in a form of a clinical audit covering the period of 24 months from October 2015 to September 2017.
