Overview

The authors describe findings concerning the administration of pilocarpine in thetreatment of glaucoma. From experiments in vivo on eyes of cattle ensues thatpilocarpine not only affects tissue structures of the anterior segment of the eyeswith a subsequent decline of intraocular pressure, it penetrates also and acts intisuue structures of the posterior segment of the eye. After interaction withglutamic acid it contributes to the preservation of ganglion cells of the centralportion of the retina and thus has an inhibitory effect on the development ofmorphological and functional changes in glaucoma.

Key words:
pilocarpine, glutamic acid in the retina, glaucoma
