Overview

Microdialysis is a new invasive monitoring method used in experimental and clinical studies. The principle is to monitor the oxidative metabolism of glucose, an early marker of tissue ischemia. It has been implemented in various fields of medicine, such as neurosurgery, intensive care, cardiosurgery, plastic surgery, pharmacology, etc. Microdialysis has been predominantly used in neurosurgery and neurocritical care. We summarize data from literature and our institutional’s 3‑years experience using microdialysis in clinical neurosurgical practice.

Key words:
microdialysis – neurointensive care – monitoring – traumatic brain injury – subarachnoid haemorrhage
