Hematemesis in a newborn

Overview
The upper gastrointestinal bleeding in newborns is rare, but it can be a manifestation of serious hemostatic disorders or diseases of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum that require special management. The condition of a newborn with hematemesis can progressively worsen and the bleeding can be life-threatening. The diagnostic process must be fast in order to provide adequate treatment to the newborn. The multidisciplinary cooperation of a neonatologist, a hematologist and a gastroenterologist is essential part of the patients management. The publication offers an overview of the causes of hematemesis in the newborn, as well as current recommendations regarding the diagnostic and therapeutic procedure. It includes a graphical algorithm for the management of a newborn with hematemesis, which was created based on the latest knowledge on the above-mentioned issue.
