Overview
The increasing prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders in the population is reflected in the increased number of pregnant and breastfeeding women being treated with antidepressants/anxiolytics from the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) groups. These drugs pass through the placenta and are excreted into breast milk, which is why attention must be paid to the potential risks to the fetus and newborn. Both these medications and untreated psychiatric disorder can negatively affect fetal development and postanatal adaptation of the newborn [1].
