Overview

In Europe, 3.9 million people die of cardiovascular disease each year. The factors leading to the development of atherosclerotic plaques also include the inflammatory process and possibly also an infectious disease. Acute infectious diseases are associated with a high risk of complications, particularly acute myocardial infarction and other cardiac events, in persons with cardiovascular disease. Influenza and pneumococcal diseases are among the most serious infectious diseases associated with a high risk of acute myocardial infarction, arrhythmias or heart failure.
