Overview

This review article summarizes current concepts of cardiovascular diseases and pregnancy. Hemodynamic changes that physiologically occur during pregnancy as the adaptation to increased metabolic needs of the mother are the basic clue for assessing the risks of pregnancy-related cardiac complications in women with heart diseases. The risk is high in cases of severe pulmonary artery hypertension, severe stenotic valvular disease, significant left ventricular dysfunction with NYHA class III or IV, Marfan´s syndrome with aneurysm of the ascending aorta, acute myocardial infarction, severe arterial hypertension and thromboembolic disease.
