News Cenobamate −⁠ A Case Study from Slovak Real Practice

Cenobamate is indicated for adjunctive therapy of focal seizures with or without secondary generalization in adult patients who have not achieved sufficient results with previous treatment with at least 2 antiepileptics. This new anti-seizure medication with a dual mechanism of action thus brings another therapeutic option for patients refractory to treatment. At the November 34th Slovak-Czech Epileptology Congress in Bratislava, during a symposium titled “Is there hope for a quality life with epilepsy?” doc. MUDr. Eva Feketeová, PhD., from the Neurological Clinic LF UPJŠ and UNLP in Košice shared her first experiences with cenobamate in clinical practice.

News Experience with 20% subcutaneous immunoglobulin in the treatment of primary immunodeficiency

Patients with primary antibody deficiency are administered immunoglobulin (Ig) replacement therapy to prevent recurrent infections. An open-label phase III study evaluated the efficacy and safety of a 20% IgG solution for subcutaneous administration compared to a 10% solution administered intravenously. We offer a brief summary of its results.

News Misuse of Over-the-Counter Medicines: Drugs Are Not Candies

Self-medication is a common strategy among Czechs when dealing with minor health issues. However, many patients are unaware that even over-the-counter (OTC) drugs can be harmful if misused. The State Institute for Drug Control (SÚKL), together with other European medicines regulatory authorities, has launched the awareness campaign “Medicines Are Not Candies” to educate the public on responsible use of non-prescription medicines.

News Dual Diagnosis as the Co-Occurrence of Substance Use Disorder and Another Psychiatric Condition

The co-occurrence of substance use disorder and another psychiatric illness is one of the most common and at the same time most challenging situations in clinical practice. Despite this, patients with an addiction-psychiatric dual diagnosis are often treated in a fragmented way, without an integrated approach. Data from recent years show that the consequences are not limited to persistent symptoms but include a markedly worse prognosis, with a higher risk of relapse, rehospitalization, and mortality.

In psychiatry, ketamine is considered a substance with a rapid onset of antidepressant action, with administration potentially leading to clinical improvement within hours to days. In addition to its pharmacological use, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) has developed in recent years. This approach combines the biological effects of the substance with targeted psychotherapeutic work and aims to prolong and deepen the antidepressant response.
