News Levodropropizine vs. dextromethorphan: Which one to recommend to your patients and why?
Reducing cough intensity and nighttime awakenings, rapid onset of action, simple dosing regimen, and good treatment tolerance—these are the properties we expect from antitussive drugs, not only in pediatrics. So which of these wins in these parameters compared to other commonly used over-the-counter antitussives?Source: Cough Therapy 12. 11. 2020Články časopisu Type 2 diabetes mellitus in old age

Venous thromboembolic disease is a significant cause of complications in surgical patients during and after hospitalization. The authors of a recently published Portuguese observational study evaluated the incidence of complications with prophylaxis using low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) enoxaparin in a population after hip or knee joint replacement.Source: Thromboprophylaxis 28. 11. 2023News Metamizole vs. Tramadol in Postoperative Analgesia
Metamizole and tramadol are well-known analgesics that have been used in practice for a long time. Interesting insights into these substances were provided by the studies presented below. Spanish doctors evaluated the efficacy and safety of metamizole compared to tramadol in postoperative analgesia after abdominal hysterectomy. German researchers were interested in the possibility of applying a combination of these drugs in an analgesic regime controlled by the patient.Source: Analgesia 19. 4. 2021Články časopisu HELLP syndrome complicated by liver rupture – case report

The most common cause of maternal death in the developed world continues to be peripartum life-threatening hemorrhage. It can result as a consequence of the consumption of coagulation factors, primarily fibrinogen. The analysis presented below summarizes information on the prevention of this complication and the use of fibrinogen concentrate therapy.Source: Life-threatening Bleeding 15. 6. 2022News Current Therapy Options for Interstitial Lung Diseases
Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) represent a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by inflammatory or fibrotic changes in the lung parenchyma. Simply put, they can be divided into inflammatory and fibrotic, with inflammatory ILDs often progressing to a fibrotic stage. Interstitial lung diseases are also associated with high morbidity and early mortality. The following text briefly summarizes the current recommendations regarding the therapy for these diseases.Source: Progressive Interstitial Pulmonary Processes 29. 8. 2022Články časopisu Treatment of pelvic avulsion fractures in children and adolescents

In 2023, a team of experts in neurology, neonatology, and pediatrics, along with representatives of parents, published recommendations for the treatment of epileptic seizures in newborns. These were developed based on a systematic literature review (and in cases of insufficient evidence, based on consensus achieved using the Delphi method) and include first and second choice pharmacotherapy, dosing, duration of treatment, effects of therapeutic hypothermia, and the use of pyridoxine. We offer their summary in a nutshell (and always indicate the strength of the recommendation in parentheses).Source: Quick aid for acute convulsive seizures in children and adolescents 21. 5. 2024News Can AI Help Accelerate the Development of Antibiotics for Gonorrhea and MRSA?
The overuse of antibiotics has helped bacteria become resistant to them. In the fight against antibiotic resistance, the involvement of artificial intelligence in the development of new drugs could prove beneficial. Using AI, experts from MIT examined more than 36 million possible compounds and evaluated their antimicrobial properties. The researchers also analyzed potential new compounds that had not yet been synthesized. The best candidate molecules discovered are structurally distinct from all existing antibiotics and appear to disrupt bacterial cell membranes through previously unobserved mechanisms.News H₂FPEF Score for Estimating the Probability of Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction in Persons with Unexplained Dyspnea
The simple, validated H₂FPEF scoring system based on clinical and echocardiographic parameters, developed by experts from the Mayo Clinic, allows the differentiation of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) from dyspnea of other etiologies and helps decide whether further examinations are necessary. The score can be calculated online and in the Czech language.Source: Heart Failure 23. 3. 2023News State of the Intestinal Microbiome and COVID-19 Infection − Possible Correlations
Some patients infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus exhibit gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea, during the course of COVID-19. Current knowledge suggests that COVID-19 symptoms are related, among other things, to the intestinal microbiome. Could the use of probiotics therefore act as a prevention of this disease or its more severe course?Source: GI, colic and microbiome 16. 2. 2021News Comorbidities of Migraine and Their Impact on Pain Frequency and Intensity
The MAST study, published in March of this year in the prestigious The Journal of Headache and Pain, focused on the occurrence of associated diseases in patients with migraine.
