News Impact of Combined Oral Contraceptives on Body Weight
A relatively recent study investigated changes in the average body weight of women who used combined oral contraceptives with 30 μg ethinylestradiol (EE) and 3 mg drospirenone (DRSP) or 30 μg EE and 2 mg chlormadinone acetate (CMA) for 6 months, comparing the results between the two groups.Source: Oral Contraception 10. 4. 2022Články časopisu Are risk factors in prenatal and perinatal period important for develompent of schizophrenia?

Pharmacological inhibition of neprilysin and the AT1 receptor for angiotensin II (ARNI) through sacubitril/valsartan reduces cardiovascular (CV) mortality and the risk of hospitalization for heart failure. The same benefit has also been demonstrated with the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i), also known as gliflozins. A pre-specified sub-analysis of the EMPEROR-Reduced study evaluated whether the benefit of SGLT2i is also significant in patients treated with ARNI.Source: Heart Failure 13. 7. 2022News A Brief History of Deep Vein Thrombosis Treatment – From Antiquity to the Present
Deep vein thrombosis is among the common diseases that have accompanied humanity since its inception. Due to the low specificity of its clinical presentation (in contrast to, for example, varicose veins of the lower limbs), however, the disease long went undescribed in literature. The first descriptions of deep vein thrombosis did not appear until the Middle Ages – and from that moment, the gradual development of its treatment began. We offer you a brief but remarkable historical excursion in three stages.Source: Prevention of Thrombosis in Surgery 4. 3. 2020News Transfer of Microbiome from Mother to Child: A Key but Fragile Process
How does the transfer of gut microbiota between mother and child occur? Is this transfer clinically significant, and what factors can disrupt it? These questions are addressed in a 2019 review article by Dutch microbiologists.Source: GI, colic and microbiome 25. 2. 2020Články časopisu Quality, clinical effectivity and harmonisation of POCT

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a heterogeneous group of disorders of hematopoietic stem cells with varying degrees of risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The therapeutic options for this disease are continually evolving. But what is the impact of this diagnosis on patients' quality of life?Source: Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) 15. 2. 2024News Doc. Jitka Fricová: The biggest challenge remains the patient with unbearable chronic pain
Research findings are pushing the boundaries of optimal chronic pain treatment, including better prevention and reduced side effects of analgesics. Algological care is readily accessible in the Czech Republic, yet it faces limitations, such as the less manageable nature of unbearable pain, particularly neuropathic or oncologic. We briefly discuss the topic with the head physician of the Pain Treatment Center at the Department of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation, and Intensive Care Medicine, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, and General University Hospital in Prague, Doc. MUDr. Jitka Fricová, Ph.D.Source: Analgesia 29. 3. 2023Články časopisu Anaesthesia for minor surgery in the early postpartum period – Czech and Slovak prospective national surveys

In the context of the significant advancements in the field of immunotherapy and evidence of its efficacy in the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, it is pertinent to ask how this will influence therapeutic strategies in the context of first-line treatment and what the role of chemoimmunotherapy will be in the algorithms for CLL. At the 2019 NCCN Annual Congress, a panel of experts, led by Professors William G. Wierda from Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Jennifer R. Brown from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, debated this topic.Source: Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia 22. 4. 2020Články časopisu Prescription and dosage of RAAS inhibitors in patients with chronic heart failure in the FAR NHL registry

Inhaled corticosteroids are prescribed to patients with COPD to prevent disease exacerbation. However, in clinical practice, they are often overprescribed in non-indicated cases. A study conducted in real clinical conditions evaluated the effect of discontinuing inhaled corticosteroids compared to continuing triple therapy in patients with COPD.Source: COPD 16. 4. 2021News How Does Artificial Intelligence Help in Drug Development?
In recent years, technologies leveraging artificial intelligence have transitioned from potentially interesting novelties to real clinical development programs. What can artificial intelligence offer the development of new drugs?News The main advantage of sartans is a very good safety profile. Now it is about increasing adherence in hypertensive patients
The rules for initiating hypertension treatment have been simplified. The trend is to achieve blood pressure control as early as possible, making it unnecessary to wait for a longer period for the effect of non-pharmacological measures. One of the 4 main classes of antihypertensives is AT1 receptor blockers for angiotensin II – sartans, which bring several advantages. These include a low incidence of side effects, a good antihypertensive effect, or the possibility of use in fixed combinations. We will take a closer look at the current position of sartans in the treatment of hypertension with Assoc. Prof. Ondřej Petrák, MD, PhD, from the Center for Research, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Hypertension at the 3rd Internal Clinic - Clinic of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague, and General University Hospital in Prague.Source: Sartans in the Treatment of Hypertension 28. 3. 2023
