News Prevalence of Heart Failure and Its Subtypes in the Population of Developed Countries

In developed countries, heart failure occurs in approximately 2% of the population, with an annual incidence of 5-10/1000 inhabitants. The mortality rate for patients with chronic heart failure is 7.2% per year, and 31.9% of patients with heart failure are hospitalized annually. Portuguese authors attempted to assess the prevalence of heart failure and its subtypes in a population treated within one healthcare facility over 3 years.

News High pH of Wounds is Associated with Poorer Burn Healing

British scientists have shown that the pH of burn wounds decreases during healing and that higher pH at the second dressing change is associated with poorer healing and the subsequent need for skin grafts. Determining the pH of wounds at the beginning of treatment could help identify poorly healing burns that require more aggressive treatment.

News Current Findings on Progressive Fibrosis in Interstitial Lung Disease

Leading pulmonologists around the world recently published the first of a series of three review articles on interstitial lung disease in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal. This article focuses on histopathology and the relationship of this disease with lung fibrosis. It also addresses the question of whether progressive lung tissue fibrosis pertains only to usual interstitial pneumonia.

News Romiplostim in Life-Threatening Bleeding Situations −⁠ Case Reports

Immune thrombocytopenic purpura, or immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), typically manifests as bleeding due to a low platelet count. Some bleeding episodes can be life-threatening or fatal. Clinical experience suggests that in acute bleeding complications, whether in acute ITP or exacerbations of chronic ITP, early use of the thrombopoietin receptor agonist (TPO-RA) romiplostim can be beneficial. Japanese authors have described three case reports of severe diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) associated with various underlying conditions.

News Targeted Treatment and Quality of Life in Patients with Follicular Lymphoma

The GALLIUM clinical trial evaluated chemotherapy in combination with targeted treatment using rituximab or obinutuzumab in previously untreated patients with advanced follicular lymphoma (FL). News Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests in the Diagnosis of Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Based on 81 scientific papers published between 2010 and 2021, experts from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore have prepared an overview of the current epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STD). We summarize information on the diagnosis of gonorrhea, chlamydial infections, M. genitalium, trichomoniasis, genital infections by HSV-1/2, and HPV using nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT), the most well-known method being PCR. NAAT shows high sensitivity and specificity in testing for these diseases.

News Adjuvant Treatment of Early Invasive HER2+ Breast Cancer −⁠ Results of the Katherine Study

Women with breast cancer found to have residual invasive disease during surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and HER2-targeted therapy have a significantly worse prognosis. For these patients, the Czech Oncology Society ČLS JEP recommends adjuvant therapy with trastuzumab emtansine based on data from the Katherine clinical study. However, this treatment has not yet been covered by public health insurance, with reimbursement starting from March 1, 2021.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease whose manifestations require long-term treatment. A poster presented at last year's European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) congress summarizes ixekizumab safety data from monitoring lasting up to 5 years, based on nearly 18,000 patient-years (PY) in the treatment of this disease.
