News Practical Experiences Using ZULP in Cardiology

The application of a product containing ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) or the use of a contrast agent with sulfur hexafluoride in microbubbles are examples of the use of specially accounted medicinal products (ZULP) in cardiology practice. "A benefit for the patient is that they receive the indicated preparation directly in the office and do not have to procure it themselves from a pharmacy," says Dr. Jiří Veselý, head physician of the Edumed cardiology clinic in Jaroměř, with whom we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of using ZULP and his experiences with this system.

News Long-Term Effect of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Therapy on Osteoarthritis – An Unconventional Case Report

Osteoarthritis is among the most common health issues in adults, with its prevalence increasing with advancing age. There is currently no causal therapy for the disease; hence, the standard approach is symptomatic treatment with surgical joint reconstruction in advanced stages of the disease. News Neuroprotective Efficacy and Safety of Vinpocetine in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke

A meta-analysis of 4 randomized placebo-controlled studies demonstrated the benefits of vinpocetine in patients with ischemic stroke (iCMP). Administering vinpocetine within 14 days of the onset of the stroke significantly reduced the level of disability and the proportion of those who died or were dependent on others after 1 and 3 months. The results showed benefits in several other parameters and indicated very good tolerability of this drug used to increase cerebral blood flow.

News Long-term Safety and Efficacy of Ozanimod in the Treatment of Relapsing Forms of MS

Ozanimod is classified as a modulator of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) receptors types 1 and 5. It is approved for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and moderate to severe ulcerative colitis (UC) and continues to undergo intensive clinical research. The DAYBREAK open-label, single-arm study for participants with RRMS from previous trials with ozanimod was scheduled to be completed by January 2023, and its final results can therefore be expected soon. The following article presents the interim analysis results of this study 5 years after initiation.

News Current Recommendations of the International League Against Epilepsy for the Treatment of Seizures in Newborns

In 2023, a team of experts in neurology, neonatology, and pediatrics, along with representatives of parents, published recommendations for the treatment of epileptic seizures in newborns. These were developed based on a systematic literature review (and in cases of insufficient evidence, based on consensus achieved using the Delphi method) and include first and second choice pharmacotherapy, dosing, duration of treatment, effects of therapeutic hypothermia, and the use of pyridoxine. News Beta-blockers in the treatment of chronic heart failure: How did the analysis of the effects of 4 drugs in 26 studies turn out?

As a cornerstone of therapy for chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), it is recommended to start treatment with a very low dose of beta-blockers (BB) and titrate it to the maximum tolerated dose. However, it remains unclear whether one BB is superior to others. For this reason, a comprehensive pooled analysis of the efficacy and safety of bisoprolol, carvedilol, nebivolol, and metoprolol in 26 studies, including 14 randomized controlled and 12 observational, was recently published.

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is a genetic disorder that primarily affects the lungs and liver. It is considered a rare disease, but it is also significantly underdiagnosed. Given the availability of specific treatment, which involves the administration of purified alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) derived from human plasma in patients with COPD due to AATD, identifying these patients is crucial. We summarize the recently issued Italian recommendations for the diagnosis of AATD and place them in the context of Czech standards.

News Lung screening in the Czech Republic has detected over a hundred cases of lung cancer

The purpose of lung screening, which has been ongoing in the Czech Republic since January 2022, is to detect early stages of lung cancer and increase awareness of this malignant disease in relation to smoking. Data analysis from health insurance companies through the National Registry of Paid Health Services (NRHZS) revealed that out of nearly 4,000 individuals who underwent low-dose CT as part of the screening examination, 116 were diagnosed with cancer.
