News OHD 2024: What’s New in Data and Experiences from Real Practice with Venetoclax Regimens?

How to utilize venetoclax regimens most effectively for treating chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in real practice was the topic of a satellite symposium organized by AbbVie during this year’s XXXVIth Olomouc Hematology Days. Three hemato-oncologists shared their experiences with venetoclax treatment, moderated by Prof. MUDr. Tomáš Papajík, CSc., from the Department of Hemato-Oncology, Faculty of Medicine, Palacky University and University Hospital Olomouc.

News Neuroprotective Efficacy and Safety of Vinpocetine in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke

A meta-analysis of 4 randomized placebo-controlled studies demonstrated the benefits of vinpocetine in patients with ischemic stroke (iCMP). Administering vinpocetine within 14 days of the onset of the stroke significantly reduced the level of disability and the proportion of those who died or were dependent on others after 1 and 3 months. The results showed benefits in several other parameters and indicated very good tolerability of this drug used to increase cerebral blood flow.

News Comparison of Efficacy and Safety of Unsaponifiable Soy and Avocado Oil and Chondroitin Sulfate in the Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease in adult patients, with its prevalence increasing with age, and these issues most frequently affect the knee joint. In the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (gonarthrosis), the so-called symptomatically slow-acting drugs in the treatment of osteoarthritis (SYSADOA) are used, among which unsaponifiable soy and avocado oil or chondroitin sulfate are included. The study compared the efficacy and safety of these two drugs in a 6-month therapy of gonarthrosis.

News Treatment Options for Advanced Parkinson's Disease Using Medical Devices (DAT)

A new treatment option for advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) using medical devices (DAT −⁠ device-aided therapy) is the intestinal infusion gel containing levodopa, entacapone, and carbidopa (LECIG). An article published in 2022 in the journal Therapeutic Advances in Neurological Disorders provides an overview of current DAT modalities in PD patients and presents LECIG as the latest extension of options in this area.

News Memantine in Dementia Therapy –⁠ Current Findings and Possible Future Applications

Memantine is an inhibitor of NMDA receptors, which are pathologically activated by excessive concentrations of glutamate in the synaptic cleft in Alzheimer's disease. It is indicated in the treatment of moderate to severe cases of Alzheimer's disease, often in combination with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. At the experimental level, its administration shows a number of promising effects, including an impact on diabetes associated with the development of neurodegenerative diseases.

News Biocompatibility of 3D Printed Materials –⁠ Their Comparison, Legislation, and Practice

Printing three-dimensional (3D) objects brings new possibilities for producing personalized implants, prosthetics, and other medical devices in healthcare. One area where this technology can improve current practice is the printing of tracheostomy tubes for use in patients after laryngectomy. However, it is crucial to ensure the biocompatibility of the materials used for printing. In November 2023, a study comparing 3D printer materials in terms of their susceptibility to the growth of bacterial biofilms from Staphylococcus aureus was published in the journal 3D Printing in Medicine.

News Minimally Invasive Treatment of Pilonidal Sinus: Laser and Negative Pressure Therapy as a Gentle and Effective Modality

The increasing incidence of pilonidal sinus contributes to the development of new treatment methods. Experiences from AGEL Hospital Přerov show that the methods SiLaC (sinus laser ablation of the cyst) and NPWT (negative pressure wound therapy) represent a gentle and effective approach for pilonidal sinus, accelerating treatment and subsequent recovery.
