Overview

The aim of the pilot study was to evaluate the effect of acupressure in a group of women suffering from migraine headaches on the quality of life, the number of migraine days and the number of analgesics and triptans used. On the recommendation of a neurologist, 20 women, aged 24–58, who had suffered from migraines for at least 2 years and were taking medication from the group of triptans, were included in the research group. The group was randomly divided into experimental and control groups of ten participants in each. In the experimental group, acupressure was used as a therapeutic method. A total of eight therapeutic units were performed over the course of 4 weeks. The number of migraine attacks and the number of acute analgesics and triptans used in the last 4 weeks before the start of the intervention and subsequently after the end of the 4-week acupressure intervention were evaluated. The entrance and exit examination was performed using the Migraine Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire Version 2.1 (MSQ v2.1), which assesses the impact of migraine on an individual‘s quality of life. The control group of migraineurs was not subjected to any other therapy. The results showed a statistically significant (at the a = 0.05 level) improvement in quality of life, assessed by the MSQ v2.1, a statistically significant reduction in the number of migraine days and a reduction in the number of acute analgesics and triptans used in the acupressure intervention group. There were no significant differences in the migraine control group.
