Expectations of expectant mothers versus the hospital reality in case the planned caesarean section

Overview
The article describes possible choices of types of anesthesia (general versus regional) for the planned Caesarean section from a lay perspective, in other words, from the viewpoint of an expectant mother who prepares for this surgery. The article summarizes current options and trends in obstetric anesthesia. The aim of the study was to assess preoperative thoughts of expectant mothers using quantitative questionnaire methods and to confront them with the hospital reality during the whole course of Caesarean section; also, to establish the information sources they draw from and that influence their decision making as to the choice of anesthesia, and subsequently to assess the objectivity and validity of the sources and information gained. Recommendations for practice are then formulated based on the current findings and their ongoing discussion.
