Overview
Obesity is the most common multifactorial metabolic disorder defined as an increased portion of the adipose tissue in the human body. The latest WHO report mentions a pandemia of the obesity. In the Czech Republic, its prevalence is currently 25.7 % in females and 22.4 % in males. A conservative approach is the main treatment method in the morbid obese patients. In case it fails, a surgical treatment is yet another option. The authors have conducted bariatric surgery (the surgical management of obesity) in the 1st Surgical Clinic since 1984. In 1993 they performed the first non-adjustable gastric bandage (NGB) using laparoscopy and since 1997 they have also performed adjustable bandages (AGB) in selected patients. From 1993 to 2004 they performed 734 procedures for morbid obesity. 647 (88 %) obese patients had the gastric non-adjusable bandage applied and 87 (12 %) of the obese patients had the adjustable bandage applied.
