Overview

Defecography is a special radiological method which has a role in constipated patients in whom defective mechanical stool evacuation from the anorectal junction is suspected. The basic technical and methodological aspects of investigation are described. Defecography is an irreplaceable procedure in the diagnosis of rectal intussusception or rectocele, which are the most frequent causes of terminal constipation. This method also contributes to the diagnosis of pelvic floor dyssynergia or anismus.

Key words:
defecography – rectal prolapse – rectocele – anismus

The author declares he has no potential conflicts of interest concerning drugs, products, or services used in the study.
