Use of neuromodulation in the treatment of lower urinary tract dysfunction

Overview
Conservative treatment of lower urinary tract dysfunction includes behavioral modifi cations, pharmacotherapy and pelvic fl oor exercise. Pharmacotherapy is used most frequently, but it is not always eff ective and oft en associatedwith adverse eff ects. If conservative treatment prooves unsucessfull, surgical methods including bladder augmentation and urinary diversions are used. Neuromodulation has the potential to fi ll the gap between pharmacological and surgical treatment. It has become widely accepted as an alternative method aft er the failure of fi rst line conservative treatment. The objective of this article is to review all of the methodsused in neuromodulation and compare their effectivness,indications and complications.
