Overview

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease with heterogeneous manifestations ranging from mild skin-joint forms associated with immunological abnormalities to life-threatening conditions with rapid progression of organ involvement. Current recommendations for therapy based on multinational European and American guidelines emphasize combined glucocorticoid-sparing immunosuppressive therapy including biological therapy. The recommendations consider not only the severity of organ manifestations, but also their specificities. The goal of therapy is to achieve remission, or at least low disease activity, prevent disease flare-ups and limit the accumulation of organ damage and their early detection. Prevention of comorbidities and their early detection has become another priority. Skin involvement in SLE is both specific (acute, subacute and chronic lupus) and non-specific. Skin manifestations are rarely life-threatening, but can significantly worsen the quality of life of patients.
