Overview

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic immune-mediated disease affecting hair follicles in intertriginous areas. In recent years, it has been shown hidradenitis suppurativa is a systemic inflammation with strong links to obesity, psychological stress and gut microbiome. These factors together create a triangle of chronic inflammatory activation through the mechanisms of the gut-brain-skin axis. The aim of this article is to summarize current knowledge about the role of intestinal dysbiosis, the stress axis, and the metabolic disorders in hidradenitis suppurativa and indicate therapeutic implications in dermatological practice.

Keywords:

obesity – gut microbiome – chronic inflammation – Hidradenitis suppurativa – gut-brain-skin axis
