Hypersensitivity to Nickel – Always Current Topic

Overview

We describe the worldwide problem – hypersensitivity to nickel. We refer to the pathogenesis of allergic contact eczema, predisposition to sensitization, and genetic susceptibility influencing disturbance in the physiological buffering capacity of the skin surface and disturbance in the coherence of the corneocytes of the stratum corneum that surely facilitate the penetration of the contact allergens into the epidermis. We concentrate on prevention of the outbreak of allergic contact eczema symptoms in sensitized patients. We describe relevant legislation in the European Union and in Slovakia. We refer to the problem of nickel presence in euro-coins and slovak-coins.
