Overview
The article summarizes basic data on valproate. Attention is devoted in particular to clinicalstudies in affective disorders, incl. Czech investigations. Valproate has a broader spectrum ofaction than lithium. It is successful also in mixed episodes of bipolar disorders and rapid cycling.The availability of the retarded form is an advantage, it is well tolerated by the gastrointestinaltract.
