Overview

Hip fractures are the most serious complication of osteoporosis and therefore a suitable parameter of diagnostics and therapy effectiveness. The aim of this study was to analyze the secular trends of incidence of these fractures in Slovakia during years 2000–2016. According to data from NCZI (National Centrum for Health Informatics) about hospitalization incidence in all Slovak hospitals in persons over 50 years the number of femur fracture (dg. S72) increased from 6029 in year 2000 to 7415 in year 2016, i.e. more than 23 %, which is about 1.5 % per year, in women this increase was 24.2 % and in men 20.4 %. The number of hip fractures, which could be considered as osteoporotic (dg. S72.0 + S72.1 + S72.2) was 6609 (3453, 2671, 485) in year 2016. Age – specific incidence over 50 year decreased from 426 to 390/ 100 tis.(i.e. -8 %) , in men from 322 to 277 (-13 %), in women from z 503 to 476 (-5.3 %). In age 50–79 years this incidence decreased, bud increase was observed in age over 80, and that in women and much more in men. Increased attention should be paid to this age group by improving diagnosis, prevention and treatment.
