Vitamin D and cardiovascular disease. What do we know about this in 2020?

Overview

There is convincing evidence that vitamin D exerts important pathophysiological effects on the cardiovascular system. Low vitamin D status seems to be associated with increased cardiovascular risk in several reports. This review summarizes possible pathophysiological mechanisms for the role of low vitamin D status in cardiovascular diseases, existing epidemiologic evidence, as well as recently available data from interventional trials.
