Overview

Rhinocerebral or rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (also known as zygomycosis) is a rare invasive fungal infection. Characterised by acute onset, the condition is particularly prevalent in immunocompromised patients and can rapidly result in death. Diabetes mellitus, especially in its decompensated form, is the main predisposing factor. Primary clinical symptoms may mimic orbital complications of rhinosinusitis. Prognosis of the disease depends on the overall condition of the affected patient as well as the stage and rate at which therapy is administered. In this article, we present a case of rhino-orbital mucormycosis in a 54-year-old man with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus followed by a discussion of the clinical symptomatology, diagnosis, and therapy of this seldom-seen but very serious illness.
