Overview

Introduction: The frailty assessment in the elderly represents a very important part of the elderly care. Frailty is a great problem of geriatric medicine and nursing, and its assessment should be a basic part of a complex nursing care. Several tools have been developed to assess frailty that now need to be implemented in practice.

Goal: The goal of the study is to present several selected tools assessing frailty in the elderly.

Methodology: 14 studies from PubMed, EBSCO, Web of Science, Scopus a Science Direct databases were included in the study. The studies from the above mentioned databases were performed between January 2013 and January 2019.

Results: Four assessment tools commonly used abroad to assess frailty were studied. The results show that the state of frailty can be evaluated using the selected tools alone, and also combined with other assessment tools.

Conclusion: Geriatric frailty represents a hot topic. The assessment tools are continuously modified so that they could accommodate current challenges developing in the elderly population. Czech nursing needs to adopt frailty assessment tools and make nurses acquainted with the topic.
